March 15, 2010 – BATTLE CREEK, Mich.- Supporters rallied for a Battle Creek man who lost his job for using medical marijuana Sunday. Walmart fired Joe Casias after he failed a drug test. Casias has sinus cancer and is legally licensed by the state to use medical marijuana. Sunday nearly a hundred people gathered in Battle Creek to rally support for Joe and protest Walmart’s policies.
“We want people to know all over the state of Michigan that if employers are going to discriminate simply because they are medical marijuana patients they can expect some push back,” said Greg Francisco of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association. “Somebody needs to make a stand – it can’t be this way,” said Joe Casias.
We tried to contact Walmart’s home office Sunday, but those offices were closed. In an earlier statement they told us they stand behind the store’s decision to fire Casias. Protestors say there could be several more rallies to support Casias’ efforts to try and get his job back.
