Mr. Humphries is mistaken. Studies show that cigarette smokers who also smoke pot have a lower lung cancer rate than those who only smoke tobacco. Studies have failed to prove a link between marijuana smoking and cancer – though they certainly tried and were suprised by these results.
Legalized marijana would cut down alcohol consumption, something the lucrative and powerful liquor industry fears. This alone would lead to fewer health problems as marijuana, unlike alcohol, is not a poison.
The government is meant to protect us from those who mean to harm us, not from ourselves. They have no right to intrude into our befrooms, bloodstreams, or bladders. A yes vote on Prop 19 is a vote for civil liberties and against big government.
