In the WandaVision Circus, Darcy as an escape artist is a clever meta-commentary on how she escaped the Thor movies for a better MCU future.
Warning: SPOILERS for WandaVision episode 7, “Breaking the Fourth Wall”.
The role of Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) in WandaVisionthe circus plays a subtle dig at its previous role in the Thor films and reminds fans how far she has come into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Darcy was chosen by SWORD in the previous WandaVision episode, “All-New Halloween Spooktacular,” and she was drawn into Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) expanding the Hex to absorb much of SWORD, turning them into a literal circus.
Prior to WandaVision, Darcy’s introduction to the MCU was in the first two Thor movies. Darcy was a political science student at Culver University who became the intern of Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) (because she was the only candidate). Together with Jane and her mentor, Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) in New Mexico, the trio discovered an Einstein-Rosen Bridge that was actually Asgard’s gateway that brought Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on earth. Darcy was a wise sidekick Thor and she came back Thor: The Dark World; although, even though Darcy had an intern this time around, Darcy had even less to do in the sequel. Darcy spent the entire MCU Phase 3 before his return WandaVision, which takes place a few weeks later Avengers: Endgame.

In WandaVision Episode 7, “Breaking the Fourth Wall”, Darcy was recast to the Hex as an escape artist in the circus. Cleverly, Darcy as an escape artist reads like a meta-commentary on how Darcy escaped the deadlock she found herself in as part of the Thor movies. Darcy’s services were not needed Thor: Ragnarok, but the astrophysicist has a new importance in WandaVision, who revealed that she is now Doctor Darcy Lewis, making her the equal of her mentors Jane and Erik. In a fun way, Darcy kept his sharp, self-destructive mind in the Hex even before Vision (Paul Bettany) restored his memories to him and asked for his help. This shows how WandaVision gave Darcy more agency than Thor. It also proved that Darcy was an “escape artist” in a different way as she sort of escaped Wanda’s mind control and remained her effervescent self.
Darcy has been invaluable in WandaVision working alongside FBI Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) and SWORD Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) to understand what’s going on in Westview from outside the Hex. Darcy not only figured out how to look at the WandaVision TV show at the base of SWORD and it ingeniously named the magical barrier that surrounded Westview “the Hex”. Darcy also hacked the encrypted files of Acting Director of SWORD Tyler Hayward (Josh Stamberg) and she learned that Hayward was planning to craft sensitive weapons out of Vision technology and that he was overseeing Rambeau’s transformation into a superhuman.
Darcy’s welcome jump Thor at WandaVision also showcases his evolution into a potential MCU main character; although Dr Lewis is still a supporting character in WandaVision, its incredibly entertaining Marvel team with Jimmy and Monica is proof of concept that the trio could headline their own MCU series. In “Breaking the Fourth Wall”, Darcy formed a quirky duo with Vision and she didn’t miss a beat by being funny and endearing as they tried to reunite the Synthezoid with Wanda, to face a series of roadblocks. frustrating drivers. Darcy, who was not taken by Thanos (Josh Brolin), also gave Vision the vital download of his life story as the Avenger absent from his memories.
As WandaVisionDarcy’s escape artist proves her versatility in every episode, and the spotted astrophysicist no longer plays second violin or is seen as a throwaway prop character. It remains to be seen what crucial role Darcy will play in WandaVisionThe end of the game, but the runaway success of reinventing Darcy’s character means this can’t be the last we’ll see of her in the MCU. Darcy escaping from Thor the movies were exactly what she needed to paint herself a bright new future for the MCU, thanks to WandaVision.
