“Devon Conway is 4 days late”: R Ashwin finds the funny side of Conway with 99 points four days after 2021 IPL auction

R Ashwin finds the funny side: Mid-ranking batsman Kiwi seems to have impressed the Indian spinner with his career best score.

On the first T20I of Australia’s ongoing New Zealand tour in Christchurch, New Zealand drummer Devon Conway narrowly missed his first century T20I in just his fifth round in the format.

Coming to bat at No.4 in just third, Conway quickly found New Zealand captain Kane Williamson (12) back at the flag. After making his T20I debut earlier this summer, the southpaw started to dictate the terms in just the fifth, hitting Jhye Richardson for a six on the side of the leg.

In the sequel, Conway hit a limit off Kane Richardson to ensure the races continued to sink despite the hosts losing three quick wickets. Facing Australian all-rounder Ashton Agar after the power play, Conway swept the left arm spinner against the turn with a mark of authority.

It was on the last delivery of the 13th when Conway ran a single off Australia’s Marcus Stoinis to complete his third half-century T20I.

As New Zealand lost Glenn Phillips (30) and James Neesham (26) to the commercial sector, Conway made it his business to find limits at will. Needing 12 points on the last three balls to register his first century T20I, Conway failed by one run because he could only run one on the last ball of the innings.

Among many other prominent names, Conway particularly impressed Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who took to social media platform Twitter to point out that the 29-year-old drummer was “four days late” for such a round.

What Ashwin meant was that Conway could have found a buyer in the 2021 Indian Premier League auction if his career best T20I effort had come before last week’s auction in Chennai.
