Mortal Kombat’s Secret Trailer Character Theory: Is It Reptile?

The Mortal Kombat trailer presents a glimpse of classic characters headlining the reboot and appears to reveal an appearance from Reptile.

The Mortal combat The trailer offers a first look at classic headliners from the long-awaited reboot, and the footage appears to include Reptile. Directed by Simon McQuoid, Martial Arts Fantasy revamps the film series based on the popular video game franchise. After several delays, the film will finally be released in April as part of WB’s streaming deal with HBO Max.

McQuoid’s Mortal combat will mark the third live episode inspired by the video game. The first debuted in 1995 and was followed by a disappointing follow-up, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. An additional sequel had been in the works since the late ’90s before it got stuck in developmental hell for nearly three decades. After a franchise rights swap and discontinued sequel plans, WB stepped in with the intention of a full reboot. Due to other budget issues, the ball started when James Wan signed on as a producer in 2015. The script took years to complete, but filming for Mortal combat started in 2019.

Mortal combat focuses on Cole Young (Lewis Tan), an MMA fighter hunted by Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) and other assassins because of his secret bloodline. Cole serves as the franchise’s brand new character, created for the reboot. He will, however, join a team of fighters chosen to defend Earthrealm against threats from Outworld forces. The characters Cole comes into contact with will surely be familiar to fans of the franchise. Classic protagonists set to play a major role include names like Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jackson “Jax” Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin) and Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). The reboot will also feature a slew of notable villains joining Sub-Zero, such as Kano (Josh Lawson), Shang Tsung (Chin Han), Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Mileena (Sisi Stringer). Based on the images, there will be several surprise characters, including Reptile, aka “Syzoth”.

Mortal Kombat Reptile Kano

While the Mortal combat The trailer is packed with fight footage and nods to the original video game franchise, it also features what appears to be a surprise cameo. Towards the end of the sequence (at 2:15), Kano can be seen fighting a reptilian creature. Since this figure does not appear to a character previously confirmed for the reboot, all signs point to the presence of Reptile. Although it may be the signature “Animality” form of a Mortal combat character, it would make more sense for the film to include an original video game figure to appease longtime fans.

If Reptile is the surprise character, that would be fitting since he initially debuted as a secret figure in the original. Mortal combat arcade game. Admittedly, its appearance is drastically redesigned for the reboot, taking more of a reptilian approach than a human form reflecting the designs of Sub-Zero and Scorpion. The design of Reptile mentioned in the new film mirrors the character’s appearance in the 2002 video game, Mortal Kombat V: Mortal Alliance. It will be interesting to see if this drastically different look for Reptile provokes controversy if it plays an integral role in Mortal combat.
